Department of Science and Technology (DST) sponsored national level training programme on "Concepts of Nowcasting & Mesoscale Disturbances" (CONMED 2011) will be conducted at the Faculty of Meteorology, AFAC, Coimbatore between 09 May 2011 and 20 May 2011. This event is co-hosted by the Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. The programme is expected to provide an excellent background to Research Students, University & College Lecturers, as well as, for commercial and military flight personnel by inspiring and motivating them to develop understanding of the role played by atmospheric processes that affect aviation in general. The course contents will cover all aspects of aviation weather, including operational experience, theory, Modelling and instrumentation for observation of Mesoscale disturbances. The programme aims to provide necessary wherewithal to all researchers who intend to work in forthcoming projects on Nowcasting in the country. Besides this, emphasis will be given to the interaction with aircrew, both from defence and civil establishments.
Topics covered:
Broadly it will cover the following topics:-
Importance of Meteorology in Aviation.
Mesoscale weather systems.
Weather forecasting and Nowcasting processes.
Importance of modern observational techniques in Nowcasting.
Diagnosis of Mesoscale weather phenomenon and Nowcasting using Radars.
Use of numerical models for Nowcasting and very short range forecasting.
Components of NWP and utilization in Nowcasting.
Mesoscale NWP models and its utility in Nowcasting.
Limitations of Nowcasting in existing observation tools and requirement of additional sensors.
Faculty: Experts in the respective areas from premier institutions & organizations in the country like Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (Pune), Centre of Atmospheric Science (IIT, Delhi), National centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (Noida), Indian Meteorology Department, , Cochin University of Science and Technology (Kochi), Bharathiar University (Coimbatore), Indian Air Force and Indian Navy, etc. will contribute to the training programme.

Age Limit for Participants: 40 years and below.
Minimum Qualification: Ph D / M.Sc / M.Tech in Physics / Meteorology / Maths / Atmospheric Sciences / Oceanography. Those who have appeared for final M.Sc/ M. Tech examinations subject to production of results of the latest semester examination and forwarding letter from their respective Heads of Departments/ Institutions are also eligible. Due weightage will be given to Doctoral students, Post-doctoral fellows, young lecturers, working meteorologists and other candidates nominated by Govt agencies and research institutions.
Applications: Last date for receipt of completed application forms is 12 Apr 11. All the selected candidates will be intimated about their selection with other necessary details by 21 Apr 11 by E Mail / post. The list of selected candidates will be available on the websites.
Organisation: The CONMED 2011 is fully supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Boarding and lodging and train travel (AC III) for the non-official participants will be totally funded by DST.
