VACANCY FOR THE POST OF DIRECTOR
The Institute : The National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM) is a premier center for research in applied
and basic rock mechanics. Set up in 1988 under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, the Institute
provides research and consultancy services broadly for the mining sector, hydro-power sector,
communication sector, geo-environmental management etc., in the areas of engineering geology,
engineering geophysics, engineering seismology, geotechnical engineering, rock fracture mechanics,
numerical modeling, rock blasting & excavation engineering, mine design, micro-seismic instrumentation &
automation, environmental engineering, dimensional stone technology, rock & materials’ testing etc. including
development of safe and efficient mining & civil constructions and assessment of stability of surface and
underground excavations.
The Job Profile : The Director is the Chief Executive Officer. He shall be responsible for the overall
functioning of the Institute and planning for its future course of action fulfilling the objectives of the Institute.
He is expected to take the Institute on a growth path to make it a center of excellence and self reliant
financially.
The Candidate : The candidate should be dynamic and competent scientist / engineer/ technologist with
outstanding contribution in the area of rock mechanics. The requirements are as follows:
Essential
Qualification
.. 1st Class B.E./B.Tech. or 1st Class M.Tech./M.E. in Mining/Civil Engineering (or)
1st Class Post Graduate in Earth Sciences.
Desirable .. Ph.D in Mining/Civil/Earth Sciences related to Rock Mechanics/Geotechnical
engineering.
Experience .. Over 20 years of experience in research/teaching/industry with outstanding
contribution in rock mechanics/geotechnical/ mining/civil engineering projects.
Scale of Pay .. PB–4 ( 37,400-67,000) ; Grade Pay 10,000
Age .. Preferably below 55
Age and experience may be relaxed by the Search-cum-Selection Committee in case of candidates
found otherwise deserving and competent.
Terms of appointment : The offer of appointment shall be on contract, initially for a period of SIX years from
the date of assumption of charge. The incumbent will be on probation for a period of one year.
Selection Procedure : The selection of the Director will be done by the Search-cum- Selection Committee
which may also consider contact / nominated candidates for the post. Candidates called for the interview will
be reimbursed AC II tier railway fare by the shortest route.
The Package : The perquisites include excellent accommodation at a nominal fee, a car with the driver and
consultancy permissible up to 100% of total emoluments.

September 2011. Duly filled in application form with copies of proof of age, qualification and experience along with a fee
of Rs.200/- by DD drawn in favour of NIRM payable at (State Bank of India, Dooravaninagar Branch, Bangalore (or) State
Bank of Mysore, KGF Branch (or) Canara Bank I Corporation Bank, Robertsonpet Branch, KGF) may be forwarded to the
Registrar, National Institute of Rock Mechanics, K. G F., on the above address. A copy of the same may also be sent
to Shri R.K. Malhotra, Director, Ministry of Mines (Govt. of India), III Floor, D-Wing, Room No.313, Shastri Bhavan,
Dr. Rajendra Prasad Road, New Delhi – 110 001. Applications from persons employed in Central I State Government /
PSUsI Universities/autonomous bodies should forward their applications through proper channel. Advance application
may be sent but No Objection Certificate should be produced at the time of interactive session. The candidates willing to
join on deputation will be governed by the relevant rules of the GOI on the subject.
Last date : The last date for receipt of applications is 30th September 2011. Applications received after the due date will

Short-listed candidates may have to attend an interactive process at New Delhi. The exact date and venue would be
